Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren on Wednesday slammed Steward Health Care and its embattled leader Ralph de la Torre, blaming corporate greed and mismanagement for the financial woes that have called into question the future of the for-profit company’s nine Massachusetts hospitals.
“Steward Health Care, led by Dr. Ralph de la Torre, Cerberus [Capital Management], and Medical Properties Trust, and greedy corporate executives like them are failing in their responsibility to patients, providers, and communities,” Markey said during a hearing before his subcommittee of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
Markey chairs the subcommittee on Primary Health and Retirement Security, which held Wednesday’s hearing at the Massachusetts State House.
